Club Volunteers

Recruiting, Rewarding and Retaining

A football club is about far more than just the players on the pitch. The FA is committed to supporting the volunteers in club football that make up the backbone of grassroots football.

A well-run club should feature the backroom staff of a chair person to oversee the clubs constitution, club secretary, treasurer, club welfare oficer, fixtures secretary, marketing and communications officer and fundraiser as well as the frontline first aiders to act as physios and team coaches/managers.

Six smart moves to help your club reach your recruitment goals!

1. Start early, don’t wait until your back’s against the wall!
What jobs need to be done? Make a list. Are some of the jobs getting too big for one person? Think about sharing out the jobs that demand a lot of time.

2. Define the tasks - What’s involved in each job?
Write a brief role description. Be honest. Let people know what you want them to do, and what they are taking on. Probably the best person to help with this is the person who did the job last season! Look at the 'Roles and Responsibilities’ section
of the Football Workforce pack for some ideas about describing jobs.

3. Leave time for some pre-season training
Who could do this job?
List the skills and experience needed. Do they really have to
know about football? What’s most important, skills or experience? How can you help people to gain the skills they need?

4. The search is on and competition for a volunteers time is intense !
Where will you find somebody with these skills? Use the network, Mums, Dads, friends, within the club, outside the club? Target your search to find the right person for the right job. Use your ‘Club Information Leaflet’ to gather information about the skills out there within the club, or amongst your supporters. Look at the example in the Football Workforce pack.

5. Right through the season let people know that they are
needed! Sell the benefits of being part of the Football Workforce. Use your club information leaflet to let people know what help you need. Look at the example in the Football Workforce pack. People like to be asked!
Match jobs to the time that people have to give. They’re much more likely to stick at it if they’re not overloaded.

6. The team’s in place as the season begins
Make it easy to join the Football Workforce team. Ease people into their new jobs with lots of support from their team-mates. Well supported new recruits will soon want to play their full part in the team. Look at the ‘Getting off to a Good Start’ checklist in the Football Workforce pack.

The FA recognises the value of volunteers and provides guides to clubs on how to recruit, retain and reward volunteers.
